Now that the first snowflakes have fallen in Amsterdam, it’s time for another winter blog post. In this blog post, you’ll find helpful tips to help you through the winter months.
Dog Jackets
Dogs that sit low and whose lower bodies quickly become wet during this wet period benefit from a jacket. A wet lower body can quickly cool a dog down. Unfortunately, not all jackets protect the belly from the cold, and sweaters are often water-permeable, which actually makes the dog colder. Think of it like walking outside in a wet sweater. We’re fans of jackets from the brand Pomppa, for example, the Pomppa Perusavailable at MedPets.
Puppy Carrier
Puppies are still very vulnerable because they can’t yet regulate their own heat properly. A carrier and a blanket are helpful for them to keep them warm. There are various brands and types of carriers on the market. We’ve personally found de 4lazylegs dog carrier very helpful, but if you prefer a backpack, the Trixie Molly Belly Carrier might be a good option for you. It’s helpful to put a small fleece blanket in the carrier to keep your puppy nice and warm.
Heating pad
For dogs that travel in the stroller because they are less mobile or very young, it’s helpful to also place a fleece blanket in the stroller and possibly a heating pad, available from medpets. Dogs that are less active also have more difficulty keeping themselves warm.
Lukewarm water
Always be prepared when going for a walk by taking a bottle of lukewarm water with you. This will also help warm your dog up a bit during the cold walk.
Road salt is poisonous
Be careful when your dog is licking and eating the snow. Your dog’s stomach can’t handle it well, and it can quickly lead to vomiting. Road salt is poisonous to your dog! Make sure you dry your dog’s paws thoroughly after a walk so they can’t lick them off later.
