Tips for the summer holiday

Finally! Summer has arrived. We have all been waiting for it with great anticipation! With summer comes the summer holiday with our dog. After all, your faithful four-legged friend prefers to travel with you! We have listed all the tips for the summer holiday.

Tip 1. What vaccinations does your dog need?

Visit the vet in time to check what vaccinations your dog needs. Various diseases occur in Europe and you really want your dog to be vaccinated for them. Examples of diseases are heartworm and leishmaniasis. Good to know: for heart worm a treatment is also required afterwards, because this can become latent and even emerge after years. The vet can tell you more about this.

Tip 2. Get your dog’s EU passport

It is now mandatory for dogs to have a European pet passport. So don’t forget it when you’re on your way!

Tip 3. Start with muzzle training

There is no general policy in Europe regarding muzzles, but in some countries or regions there is a muzzle requirement for certain dog breeds or for all dogs on public transport. If you do get a muzzle, choose a good one. The Baskerville  muzzles are recommended. A dog can still pant with this muzzle to cool himself down and the muzzle is comfortable. Always do muzzle training in a gradual and positive way.

Tip 4. Avoid the hottest time point of the day

Well, we really want to go to a sunny country for the summer holiday with our dog. Only, when you have a dog, this can be a bit more complicated. Avoid walks during the hottest times of the day. Provide sufficient drinking water. A place with shade and fresh air is good for your dog. Give your dog enough rest.

Tip 5. Choose a dog-friendly accommodation

This may sound logical, but if you are on holiday somewhere and you find out that the host of your accommodation does not appreciate your dog coming along, you are still standing there. So: book via a website with dog-friendly holiday addresses. For example natuurhuisje.nl

Tip 6. Bring your dog toolkit!

Don’t forget to bring your personal toolkit for your dog! Toolkit, it’s a word, but how else can we describe it? By this we mean: tick pen, his own food, water bottle, first aid kit, medication, extra dog leash, brush, poop bags, toys, blanket, etc.

Well, here we have it. Already some tips. There are probably many more to think of, but here we help you a bit.

A nice website to also have a look at: licg.nl. There are a lot of tips for the holiday including a checklist.
