Fun between the leaves

Autumn is back with all its beautiful colors! Dogs love browsing through the leaves during autumn. You can often even use the leaves for a fun sniffing game with your dog. Try tossing some treats among the leaves and let your dog search for them!

Pay attention to what’s lying around

Dogs can have a lot of leaves and searching games. But it’s also good for owners to be vigilant during this period. Did you know that acorns, chestnuts, beechnuts, and pine cones can be dangerous for your dog?

• Acorns contain certain toxic substances that can cause gastrointestinal problems. Eating multiple acorns can lead to serious kidney damage.

• Beechnuts contain hydrogen cyanide and can also cause serious organ damage.

• Pine cones and chestnuts themselves aren’t poisonous, but their hardness can quickly cause a life-threatening gastrointestinal blockage when eaten.

Dogs can show symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, lethargy, and restlessness after eating this food. So, try to prevent them from eating it.

If your dog does get it in its mouth, you can swap it for a treat. Has your dog already swallowed it? Then it is good to be vigilant for the above described symptoms. When your dog shows these symptoms, contact your vet right away.

So be careful under which trees you do your sniffing game! If your dog is off leash, keep an eye out for things off the ground.
