Dogs should have clean teeth just like people and therefore dental care is important. The teeth and molars of dogs can be brushed just like our own teeth and molars. There is, however, one big difference when you brush the teeth of your dog.  For dogs, it is important that you use toothpaste that has been specially developed for dogs, such as dog toothpaste from Beaphar or Trixie. Be aware that regular toothpaste contains fluoride and some toothpastes contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.

Why brushing the teeth is important

Brushing your dog’s teeth can prevent dental problems such as excessive plaque and bad breath. Tartar and plaque can lead to inflammation of the gums, which can spread to the jawbone or even lead to heart problems. If there is too much tartar and the dog is bothered by it, it will be removed by the vet under anesthesia. It is therefore important to maintain your dog’s teeth!

Tootbrushes

There are various toothbrushes for your dog on the market. We ourselves are fans of the finger toothbrush available at traumapet. You can easily slide this rubber toothbrush around your finger so that you can feel exactly how hard you are pressing on the gums.

Once or twice a week is often sufficient to prevent most plaque and tartar formation.

Chewing toys

Chewing toys can partly help keep teeth clean. However, it is not a miracle cure against tartar and plaque. So, it is better to give chewing toys and brush the teeth as well.
